Livestock farming or animal husbandry, is the type of agricultural practice that deals with raising of animals for the purpose of producing meat, eggs, milk, wool, manure, and leather. Some people use this system of farming as a business venture where they get their means of livelihood. It includes the care, breeding, and management of domesticated animals such camel, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbit, chickens, and other livestock.

Components of livestock farming include:

1.     Housing: Provide a safe and conducive environment for the animals to live in.

2.     Feeding: Providing the appropriate food to ensure the good health and productivity of the animals.

3.     Breeding: Sorting and mating animals to produce offspring with good traits.

4.     Healthcare: Treating and preventing illnesses to ensuring overall animal welfare.

5.     Management: Overseeing the daily operations and managing the overall running of a livestock farm.

6.     Sustainability: Implementing practices that are environmentally friendly and economically viable.

Types of Livestock farming

There are types of Livestock farming

  1.  Mixed production.
  2.  Intensive farming systems
  3.  Extensive production system.

Mixed production: This system of livestock includes both plants and animal and it can be either intensive or extensive. These systems uses both irrigated and non-irrigated land and they are mostly in some parts of Africa, America, Asia and Europe.

Intensive farming systems or landless: It mainly deals with livestock. Intensive breeding farms is a kind of place to breed chickens, laying hens, pigs, camels, cattle and fish. These farms are common in Africa, North America, Europe, Asia and in highly populated areas, where. This type of livestock is also mainly practice were high demand of meat is needed

Extensive production system: This is the type of livestock management system that uses large non-cultivated land where animals can graze freely. Extensive farming is mainly chosen for cattle grazing to meat and milk production, it also include sheep and goats grazing. This system of livestock farming is common in West Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, Cameroom) and South America (Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Peru), and in some Southern Africa countries (South Africa, Namibia and Botswana).
